National Convention still holds on August 17th- PDP insist

PDP says their party convention slated for August 17th in Rivers state will still hold despite  yesterday's court order by Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High court, stopping the convention. Read the party's press statement below:
The Leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by the Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, CON has reacted to the Ruling of a Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday July 28, 2016, presided over by the controversial Judge, Justice Okon Abang describing it as objectionable, questionable and very strange to say the least in the history of Nigeria Judiciary.
The Party in a statement by its Spokesman, Prince Dayo Adeyeye declared that what Justice Okon Abang did today is to Seat on an Appeal over the Court of competent and coordinate jurisdiction and that’s what makes his Interlocutory Order very strange. The Judgment of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt was very clear that the National Caretaker Committee was duly constituted and recognized; and in line with that, the scheduled National Convention for August 17, 2016 still holds.

We have just received information that Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted an Order of Interlocutory Injunction stopping our scheduled National Convention in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, but we want to state that the Judgment of the 4th of July, 2016 supersedes any Ex-Parte Order or Interlocutory Injunctions. So, our National Convention will hold as scheduled in Port Harcourt, Rivers State” Prince Adeyeye said.

Let Nigerians recall the two former Judgments before the Port Harcourt Judgment, declared that Senator Sheriff is not qualified to be a National Chairman given that the PDP Constitution 2014 which he claimed brought him to power is not in existence and therefore, null and void.

The PDP wants Nigerians to know that Justice Okon Abang is deliberately engaging in acts of derailing the Country’s democracy given the fact that his Court is not an Appeal Court that can set aside any Judgment. He has penchant for abuse of court processes and actions of legal impunity. This Judge Nigerians will recall, issued Judgment against the Governor of Abia State that led to INEC re-issuing another Certificate of Return to a man who did not contest election thereby causing unnecessary hardship on the people of that State. He also issued an Order to INEC to recognize Senator Sheriff’s candidates in Edo and Ondo states before they could even plan their purported congress in Edo.

In today’s Case, this same Judge out rightly denied the PDP representation in Court which is unheard of by serving the Plaintiff (Sheriff & Co.) who instituted the Case also as PDP (defendants). His excesses are extremely absurd, strange and unbecoming of a Judge who enjoys putting the Judiciary on the spot. We therefore bring this matter before the highest level of Judiciary in the Country to stop this Judge forthwith from waging war against the PDP.

We are equally calling on Nigerians and the international community to compel Nigeria Judiciary to address Justice Abang’s excesses before he kills our hard earned democracy.
However, the Party is law abiding and therefore, will apply for Stay of Execution of this Order and also Appeal it.

Finally, the Party calls on all its members and teaming supporters nationwide to remain calm and law abiding and be rest assured that the PDP National Convention will hold as scheduled and all preparation towards the August 17, 2016 National Convention remains the same.

Signed:
Prince Dayo Adeyeye
Member, National Caretaker Committee

FUTA suspends four students involved in alleged N16m internet fraud

The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) has indefinitely suspended four students of the institution, who were arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for the roles they played in an alleged N16 million Internet fraud. Out of the five suspected undergraduate scammers that were arrested, 4 are from (FUTA) while 1 is from Adekunle Ajashin University, Akungba. They allegedly swindled unsuspecting foreigners and others to the tune of N16M by engaging in fraudulent activities of obtaining money by false pretences through scam mails.

A statement released by the Head, Information and Protocol Unit of FUTA, Mr. Adegbenro Adebanjo, said the university’s vice chancellor approved the sanction based on the school rules, which stipulate indefinite suspension for students arrested and being investigated for allegation of criminal activities. Part of it read,
“The four students, who have been given indefinite suspension and are to stay away from the school until further notice, are Ogundile A.O , Civil & Environmental Engineering; Fasakin  P. T, Civil & Environmental Engineering; Akinsanmi F.O, Mathematical Sciences; and Ifeobu U. O. of the Department of Urban & Regional Planning. This is in accordance with the provisions of the university Handbook of Information 2012-2015 Page 54, paragraph 5(i) which states that, 'Whenever a student is being investigated for a criminal offence by the Police or is charged with a criminal offence; whether or not connected with the university; the student shall be suspended from his studentship until he/she is cleared of the allegation/charge'.”

#SaveMayowa was a scam! She was sick but was beyond treatment. Her family stole money from Nigerians

This is such a sad thing for me to report this afternoon. Just two days after we were all happy that Nigerians kindly donated to cancer patient, Mayowa Ahmed, for surgery she needed for ovarian cancer, LIB just learnt that Mayowa and her family scammed kind hearted Nigerians.

You see, Mayowa is really sick. She truly has Ovarian cancer. She's admitted at LUTH but she didn't need money for surgery, because doctors had told Mayowa she was beyond treatment and no hospital in the world could treat her as she was extremely far gone. Mayowa had reached stage 4 and doctors, unfortunately, already told her family she won't survive it and had advised them to take her home. Her family instead used her situation to raise money from Nigerians. The doctors in LUTH have also denied giving her family a medical report advising her to seek treatment abroad. Continue..

Toyin Aimakhu, who was one of those who spearheaded the fundraising, as you read this, is at LUTH right now with police officers. Some people also went to the family's home and the place is locked up. Will share video from the scene  at LUTH, involving Toyin and one other donor later...

#SaveMayowa raised over $100k on GoFundMe and millions of Naira.

Jilted wife caused major security alert at Geneva airport after she made hoax bomb tipoff to stop husband from leaving

Jilted wife caused major security alert at Geneva airport after she made hoax bomb tipoff to stop husband from leaving

A major security alert that caused Geneva airport to step up armed security on Wednesday was caused by a bomb hoax made by a woman who did not want her husband to leave.

As Geneva police informed passengers of heightened checks on Wednesday morning, officers carrying sub-machine guns were busy carrying out urgent security operations around the airport in Switzerland’s second largest city.

It has now emerged that police were acting on an anonymous tip received by Swiss customs on Tuesday, which claimed that a person carrying a bomb would enter the French sector of the airport

According to Swiss prosecutors, security authorities were able to trace the call to a house in Annecy, approximately 41 kilometers south of Geneva. Following a police raid at the French address, a woman admitted to making the false threat to "prevent the departure of her husband."
"Yesterday in the evening, a woman called Swiss customs at Geneva airport. She said that today a person carrying a bomb would be in the French sector of the airport," the Geneva prosecutor's office said in a statement. They found the woman admitted to having made the call and explained that she wanted thereby to prevent her husband from leaving," the statement said
Criminal proceedings against the unidentified woman have been opened by both French and Swiss prosecutors. Police had warned earlier that there would be an “indefinite period” of reinforced security.

During the scare, armed police could be seen manning entrances and perimeters put in place to protect terminal. Authorities have since released a statement saying the preventative controls would be gradually lifted over the course of the day.

Photos: Family members weep as Indonesia fast tracks execution, Titus Igwe ask to see his wife and kids for the last time

Family members of 14 death row prisoners wept and one was close to collapse after learning the largest mass killing of convicted drug felons in Indonesia would take place on Thursday night - 24 hours earlier than expected

Lawyers and embassy staff were also grim-faced as they emerged from the prosecutor's office in Cilacap on Thursday after being informed the deaths of the eight Nigerians, including Titus Igwe, four Indonesians, one Indian and one Pakistani were just hours away.

The executions were proceeding despite nine of the condemned filing last-minute clemency pleas and pressure to postpone the executions amid growing evidence that
"This is just insane, it should be tomorrow," said the director of the Community Legal Aid Institute, Ricky Gunawan, who was filing clemency pleas on behalf of Indonesian woman Merri Utami and Nigerian Humphrey Jefferson Ejike Eleweke.
Human rights lawyer Todung Mulya Lubis said at least three of those facing the firing squad - Mr Eleweke, Ms Utami and Pakistani textile worker Zulfiqar Ali - may have received wrongful judgments.
"In the name of justice, they deserve a retrial," Dr Mulya said. He said many had not lodged clemency pleas until the 11th hour because that would be to admit guilt and they insisted they were innocent. This third round of executions is the largest number of people ever executed in Indonesia's history - it's unprecedented," Dr Mulya said.

The sister-in-law of Michael Titus Igweh,(pictured in veil holding up a family statement condemning the execution) who alleged police had applied electricity to his genitals to force him to confess to heroin possession, said his final request had been to see his wife and family for the last time.

However she said Mr Igweh's wife was in Nigeria and would not arrive in Indonesia until Friday - hours after her husband was killed.
"Yesterday I met Titus and he was angry and upset," Nila said. "He said: 'What kind of justice is this? What kind of country is Indonesia?"
Nila said she had chosen to sacrifice her last-ever visit to Mr Igweh in order to tell his story to the media:
"At this time I believe there are two things that can help Titus, one is God and one is the media. If that was the last time to see Titus, than so be it."
On Thursday morning 17 ambulances - 14 containing coffins -  were ferried to Nusakambangan, known as Indonesia's Alcatraz, where the prisoners will be strapped to wooden posts and shot dead by a firing squad.

Police leaked grisly details leaked to the media by Police about the logistics of executions, including the size of the coffins, which were as long as 190 centimetres for some of the Africans.

They said 198 executioners would be deployed, 140 guards, 70 equipment personnel and a 16-person sterilisation team. Each convict would require chains, a padlock, white aprons, a head cover, a pole, a chair, a marking sticker, a plastic bag for their belongings and scissors.

Meanwhile, Catholic priest in Cilap confirms he will visit 3 Nigerian prisoners ahead of their execution, according to Indonesia bureau chief for ABC, Samantha Hawley.
